This is a very old tradition from the Middle Ages. At that time the servants were masters for one day of the year. They gave orders to their masters, and their masters had to obey. Now this day is different. It’s a day for jokes and tricks.
There are always a lot of parties on that night of the year. At these parties people wear masks and they dress as ghosts and witches, or as Dracula or Frankenstein’s monster. And some people make special lamps from a large fruit — a pumpkin.
On that day, people send cards and presents to their husbands, wives, boyfriends and girlfriends. You can also send a card to a person you don’t know. But traditionally, you must never write your name on it.
This is a spring holiday. Pysanka is a popular emblem of this day. It symbolises the birth of new life and the coming of spring. Another popular symbol is «Easter kulich» or «paska». Paskas are baked beforehand, but are eaten only on the day of this holiday.
This is one of the most remarkable public events in Ukraine. It is traditionally celebrated on the 9th of May. This patriotic holiday commemorates the victory of our country over Nazi Germany. Every year in honour of this day in all cities across the country lots of cheerful parades are held.
